Introduction
In the world of Business Studies, Henri Fayol is known as the "Father of General Management." Whether you are a Class 12 student preparing for boards or a budding entrepreneur, understanding these 14 principles is essential. These rules serve as a foundation for managing any organization effectively.
Why are Fayol’s Principles Important?
Fayol’s principles are not rigid; they are flexible guidelines that help managers take decisions and handle complex situations. Below, we break down each principle to help you score high in your exams.
The 14 Principles of Management
- Division of Work: Specialization increases efficiency. By dividing work into small tasks, employees become experts in their specific roles.
- Authority and Responsibility: There must be a balance between the power to give orders (Authority) and the obligation to perform duties (Responsibility).
- Discipline: Obedience to organization rules and employment agreements is necessary for smooth functioning.
- Unity of Command: An employee should receive orders from one supervisor only to avoid confusion.
- Unity of Direction: One unit, one plan. All activities with the same objective should be directed by one manager.
- Subordination of Individual Interest to General Interest: The goals of the organization must come before the interests of a single employee.
- Remuneration of Employees: Compensation should be fair to both the employees (providing a decent standard of living) and the organization (within paying capacity).
- Centralization and Decentralization: There should be a proper balance between power at the top and spreading it throughout the levels of the organization.
- Scalar Chain: The formal line of authority from highest to lowest ranks. In emergencies, "Gang Plank" can be used for direct communication.
- Order: A place for everything and everyone. People and materials should be in the right place at the right time.
- Equity: Managers should be kind and fair to all workers, ensuring no discrimination.
- Stability of Personnel: Employees should be given enough time to show results. Frequent turnover is bad for the company.
- Initiative: Workers should be encouraged to develop and carry out plans for improvement.
- Espirit de Corps: Promoting team spirit and harmony. Replace "I" with "We."
