🎯 UNIT 1 KEYWORD SUMMARY: The Board Exam DNA
To master Unit 1, you don't need to memorize pages; you need to master these Core Keywords. Use this box for a 2-minute quick revision before any test:
Unit 1 Finale: Mastering the Application
We have spent the last nine days meticulously building the blocks of Nature and Significance of Management. From the industrial hubs of Jamshedpur to the thriving retail markets of Ranchi, we have seen these concepts in action. But the real test is how you handle the "Board Exam Language." CBSE doesn't ask "Define Management"; they ask about "Mr. Sharma's factory in Hatia." Let’s dive into the core revision of the trickiest areas.
The 3-Step Case Study Technique
In my 25 years of teaching, I have developed a foolproof method for my students in Jharkhand to tackle any 6-mark case study.
- Scan the End First: Read the question part before the story. If it asks for "Levels," your brain starts looking for titles like CEO or Foreman.
- Identify the 'Pivot' Word: Look for words like "But," "However," or "Moreover." These usually signal a conflict between Efficiency and Effectiveness or a gap in Coordination.
- Quote to Prove: Never just give the answer. Quote the line from the case study that supports your identification.
Core Lesson: Unit 1 Case Study Marathon
Scenario: "Birsa Metals Ltd." based in Tatisilwai, Ranchi, set a target to produce 20,000 units of high-grade steel rods per month. To meet a sudden export order, the production manager ignored the routine maintenance of machines. He achieved the target on the 29th day, but the machines broke down the next day, resulting in a repair cost of ₹5 lakhs and high electricity consumption during the rush.
Question: (a) Was the manager effective and efficient? Justify. (b) Which objective of management did he ignore in the long run?
Click to view Marking Scheme Answer
(a) Identification: The manager was Effective but NOT Efficient.
Justification: He was effective because he achieved the target of 20,000 units on time (29th day). He was not efficient because he ignored maintenance, leading to high repair costs and electricity wastage, which increased the cost of production.
(b) Objective Ignored: He ignored the Organizational Objective (Survival/Growth). By damaging the machinery for a short-term goal, he put the long-term survival and potential growth of the firm at risk.
Scenario: In a garment export house in Ranchi, the Marketing Manager promised a 10% discount to a bulk buyer to close a deal. However, the Finance Manager refused to honor the discount, claiming it would lead to a loss. Meanwhile, the Production Manager complained that the Marketing team is taking orders for designs that are no longer in stock.
Question: (a) Identify the concept of management missing here. (b) Explain any two characteristics of this concept using NCERT headings.
Click to view Marking Scheme Answer
(a) Missing Concept: Coordination (The Essence of Management). The departments are working in isolation without synchronizing their activities.
(b) Characteristics (NCERT):
- Ensures Unity of Action: Coordination acts as the binding force between departments to ensure all actions are aimed at achieving common goals.
- Continuous Process: It is not a one-time act but is required at every stage from planning to controlling to prevent such clashes.
Scenario: Rohan, a student at St. Xavier's Ranchi, says "Management is a full profession like Medicine because IIM Ranchi offers a degree in it." His sister, Riya, disagrees saying anyone can be a manager in their father's shop without any degree.
Question: Who is right? Explain the status of management as a profession by comparing two features.
Click to view Marking Scheme Answer
Verdict: Riya is right. Management is not yet a full-fledged profession; it is an Emerging Profession.
Comparison of Features:
- Well-defined body of knowledge: Both satisfy this. Management has its own theory and principles like medicine.
- Restricted Entry: Medicine has restricted entry (MBBS is mandatory). Management does not have restricted entry; anyone can be a manager regardless of degree. This is why Riya is correct about their father's shop.
High-Order Thinking Skills (HOTS) Revision
To get that 100/100, you must understand the subtle "Inexactness" of management. Why is it called a Social Science? Because the Principles of Management are not like the laws of Physics. While the Law of Gravity is the same in Koderma as in New York, a motivational technique that works in a software firm might fail in a coal mine. This unpredictability of human behavior is why management requires the "Art" of personalized application.
If you look at the success of Tata Steel in Jamshedpur, it is a perfect case study of Unit 1. They have Effectiveness and Efficiency in their production. They balance Organizational, Social, and Personal Objectives (building the city of Jamshedpur). They have clear Levels of Management. And above all, they have Coordination across thousands of employees. When you write your exam, keep the 'Tata Model' in mind—it covers everything we've learned.

(i) Levels of Management:
- Top Level: Mr. Gupta (CEO). Quote: "The CEO, Mr. Gupta, has set a goal..."
- Middle Level: Plant Superintendent. Quote: "...hired a 'Plant Superintendent' to look after the cold storage..."
- Supervisory Level: Foreman. Quote: "...a 'Foreman' to manage the delivery boys."
(ii) Function of Management: Planning. Quote: "...set a goal to double the number of outlets by December 2026." (Goal setting in advance).
(iii) Missing Essence: Coordination. Quote: "...cold storage is full... delivery boys have no bikes... Finance Manager didn't release the funds." (Failure to synchronize activities of different departments).
